Dora Alanen was born on Feb. 25, 1916 in Port Arthur. She was the loving only daughter of the late Olga Sillman Hietala Alanen and stepfather, Herman Alanen.
She had an unusual musical beginning. She became very ill while attending the Canadian Primary School System and had to be quarantined for a long period of time. School assignments were brought to her home and her mother home-schooled her.
The family doctor asked if there was anything he could get for her. Dora requested a piano. Mr. Turner, the owner of the local music store stopped by, but Mrs. Alanen said she could not afford a piano. Mr. Turner asked if she had something to trade. Mrs. Alanen owned a piece of undeveloped land, so it was agreed Dora would get a piano in exchange for a deed to the rocky piece of land.
Dora had a good ear and was quite a musical prodigy. She picked out tunes she heard on the radio and at church and played them. Her talent so impressed a neighbour she brought over some music lessons for Dora to practice. She taught herself and quickly learned to read music. Her mother found her a music teacher in Sister Celeste at the local Catholic Church Convent.
Dora advanced quickly and was admitted into the Toronto Conservatory of Music and received her Associate of Music Degree. She conducted and accompanied three local choirs at the age of 17. She performed at local churches and accompanied local vocalists and instrumentalists.
During this time Dora entered several music competitions. Lillian Powers, visiting from the US, heard her play. She invited Dora to come to Chicago and audition at the Chicago Musical College (C.M.C.), where she was accepted as a scholarship student.
Dora, a Canadian native became a naturalized U.S. citizen on Dec. 6, 1949. At C.M.C. she studied under Dr. Rudolph Ganz and after graduating from the Chicago Musical College, she made her debut recital at the Chicago Musical Guild.
She continued to perform numerous piano recitals throughout the United States, Canada and abroad and also accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists.
She was a passionate supporter of young musicians and inspired many students throughout her years at North Park University, a private Christian university in Chicago, founded in 1891. Dora was a loved and respected pianist and piano teacher at North Park University for 35 years.
She was also active in the Finnish-American community. Although she lived and worked in Chicago, Dora maintained close contact with family and friends in Thunder Bay.
In 2004 she completely lost her vision after suffering a stroke. Dora Alanen, aged 92 years, died August 14, 2008 at Methodist Home in Chicago. As per her wishes, cremation took place. A Memorial Service was held on August 24 at the Methodist Home, 1415 Foster Ave., Chicago, IL.
Dora’s cremated remains were interred in her mother’s grave in Canada. Donations were made in her name to Methodist Home for a new piano.
In Canada, a memorial service was held at Hilldale Lutheran Church on Sunday Sept 21, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jari Lahtinen officiating. Family and friends were invited to share in a celebration of Dora’s life and her love of music. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Music Program of Hilldale Lutheran Church were appreciated.
Dora is survived by numerous relatives in Thunder Bay, other parts of Ontario and Finland and her many close friends in Canada and the United States, especially in Chicago.
Dora’s belief “life is about relationships with God, family and friends, not about stuff.” ■

Dora Alanen, piano recital in 1940.

Dora Alanen syntyi 25.02.1916 Port Arthurissa.
Doran kiinnostus musiikkiin alkoi aika erikoisella tavalla.
Herra Turner tiedusteli olisiko rouva Alasella jotain vaihdettavaa.
Doran soittotaito kehittyi nopeasti, ja hänet hyväksyttiin Toronto Conservatory of Music -kouluun, jossa hän suoritti Associate of Music -tutkinnon.
Samaan aikaan Dora otti osaa moniin musiikkikilpailuihin.
Kanadalainen Dora sai Amerikan kansalaisuuden 6.12.1949.
Dora Alanen menehtyi 14.08.2008, 92 vuoden ikäisenä Methodist Homessa Chicagossa.
Toivomuksensa mukaisesti hänet polttohaudattiin. Muistotilaisuus pidettiin 24.8. Methodist Homessa, 1415 Foster Ave. Chicago, IL.
Doran tuhkat haudattiin Kanadassa hänen äitinsä hautaan. Lahjoituksia tehtiin hänen nimissään Methodist Homelle uuden pianon ostoa varten.
Kanadassa pastori Jari Lahtinen johti muistotilaisuuden Hilldale Luterilaisessa kirkossa 21.09.2008 kello 14:00.
